Rocking The Rock
Undeniably the first thing you notice about this piece when you look at it is the dial and for good reason: it’s made of stone! Not just any stone though, this one-of-a-kind dial has been carefully carved from a small piece of limestone rock extracted from the western cliff of the Rock of Monaco. The Final Word
Whilst in our opinion this piece may lack the creativity of some of the other participating brands (think MB&F) it is still a very solid entry and certain to attract plenty of attention from bidders. Add to that the once in a lifetime opportunity to own your very own piece of Monaco and it’s not hard to see that Romain Jerome is certainly doing their part to ensure this will be a successful event.

Perfect First Time, Every Time
Although this design is a first for the brand it fits so perfectly into the existing collections that you’d swear they had been making them forever. Note the classic style cues and high-level of finishing, trademark characteristics and just two of the many features that make these timepieces so desirable. What is perhaps more exciting though is the fact that Patek has created this new movement to be the benchmark for future developments. Former professional drummer Lionel Ladoire took on the duties of percussionist for the night, whilst mathematics professor Willy Viriot and tatto artist Seb rounded out the ensemble. The Rolling Stones’ “Harlem Shuffle” gave the first spark to the playlist, while Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” got everybody up and moving, as well as a few more tunes from this unlikely band (which had only managed 3 rehearsals prior to their maiden performance!).

After a short auction break for the benefit of Vaccines for Life (thanks dear Emma de Caunes for the introduction) it was time to party, and tuxedos and cocktail dresses could be seen literally flying over the dance-floor as people who had been making 7 digit deals the same morning let their hair down.

The Final Word
The first edition of an industry event is always a delicate affair. It can literally destroy your reputation within 3 hours, or make you the corner stone of a would-be major event of our world. For sure, Sparkle’s event belongs well and truly in the second category. Well done to all involved and let’s hope that future editions will continue to share the intimate and friendly atmosphere we experienced, because I tell you, this is an event that is here to stay.

One thing is for sure though, next year I won’t be waiting for 4 different signs from above before saying yes!

We love the fact that Urwerk brought the iconic UR-103 out of retirement just for Only Watch. However, to ensure this piece was truly unique Urwerk invited the extremely talented master engraver Jean-Vincent Huguenin to hand-decorate this one of a kind white gold piece. The end result is nothing short of sensational – Urwerk wanted to recognize the plight of those engaged in the battle to save children from muscular dystrophy, and so the UR-103 sports that most quintessential symbol of resistance and resilience: A phoenix rising from the flames.

Comparing the watch releases of SIHH 2010 and Baselworld 2010, I would have to say that for the most part I was more impressed with the releases at SIHH, and it was a significantly smaller show. Why that is I am not sure, but here is another one of the good things that I spotted. This isn’t just another Panerai watch, but rather the PAM339 in a special ceramic case. While it doesn’t surprise me to see Panerai going ceramic, it just sort of happened without notice.
Panerai doesn’t even call their material ceramic really, but rather “Composite.” Why? Not sure, there must be some sneaky marketing decision. Replica Omega Watches One of the reasons likely has to do with the fact that Panerai uses a different type of ceramic. It is very light, and stated to be much harder than standard ceramics. The hardness is a little bit harder that standard zirconia ceramics, and way harder than steel. In terms of weight, Panerai Composite weighs less than titanium, and just a bit more than aluminum. In fact, the material is said to be a ceramic based on aluminum – but much harder. In reality while wearing the watch, the lightness makes itself clear. The watch doesn’t feel like it weights much at all, the opposite of the standard Panerai watch feel. They look like aged leather, and the look is pretty good I must admit. The vintage style leather strap is cool and feels high quality with its medium brown tone and contrast stitching. Don’t forget the matching brown, Panerai style buckle. According the Panerai, the color of the stitching was meant to match the color of the SuperLumiNova on the watch dial – a little detail that you’d probably need pointed out to you to notice, but the effect works in the watch’s aesthetic favor.

Panerai has placed one of its newer in-house made Calibre P.2002/7 manually wound movements in the watch. Although I would have preferred an automatic or at least a power reserve indicator, the movement does have a power reserve length of about 8 days. imitation watches That is pretty nice, but without a power reserve indicator, you never know how much power you have in it. So you just end up fidgeting with the crown all the time to wind it. Then again, without even a date, if the movement runs out, resetting it isn’t a big deal.
For Panerai collectors the PAM339 will feel like a good investment. It looks really cool, is done in a cool material, has an in-house made movement, and is a limited edition (of 1,000 1,500 pieces). Though the watch does cost about $15,000. If the budget is up your alley, and you want a fresh feeling Panerai with a classic look – this should make for an excellent choice.

Many people dream of really thin mechanical watches. I’ve even had people tell me how awesome it would be to have this ultra wafer-thin watches. For me the idea wasn’t super appealing in theory, and then I finally got to experience some ultra thin mechanical watches and the desire turned on like a light a switch. Most thin mechanical watches are manually wound, which sort of defeats the point for me – as what I really want are automatic watches.

One of the best parts of the ludicrously thin 5.25mm watch is that it has a sapphire exhibition caseback with a view into the new Piaget caliber 12p hand-done movement. You can see the circular style polish strips, blued steel screws, and gold micro-rotor. Because the watch is wider at 43mm, the movement looks sized like a flat Waterman cracker. As luxury watches go, these fit an interesting and important niche. Classy, formal, and dressy are all terms you could use to describe where a watch like this fits from a genre perspective.
